How to rank your Vinebase site higher on search engines

Creating great content

Engaging, helpful content that answers a potential visitor's questions is a great way to improve your visibility in search results. 

Creating great content can seem difficult at times, but it doesn't have to be. Here are a few tips for you to improve the content on your site so you can rank high on search engines.

Focus on the reader

When creating new content, create content that real humans would like and enjoy. Not content aimed at search engines (Google can tell the difference).

Not sure what to write about? Answer the questions your reader wants to know

Consumers typically have a lot of questions for you when they taste your wines in person. 

These questions — particularly the ones that come up time and again are great starting points for your content. Vinebase gives you plenty of various content areas to answer these questions - whether it's in the main content section of the home or about page, details and fun facts about your wines, press mentions and team members, or the optional experience us page.

Write for the way people read

One metric search engines use to gauge whether people like your content is how much time they spend on a page. What makes you want to spend time on a page?

  • Use a combination of images and text
  • Write simply - avoid jargon
  • Use headers and bullet points
  • Don't say something in 60 words than could be said in 30
  • Avoid "walls of text"

By following these rules of thumb, it's more likely your visitors will read through your content and therefore spend more time on your page.

As mentioned before, writing for the web means writing simply. A reading level of grade 6 or below is recommended for content on the web.

Check your spelling and grammar

Another thing to check before publishing content in your spelling and grammar. Running your content through a tool like grammarly can fix any glaring spelling and/or grammar mistakes.

Building backlinks

A backlink is a link to your website from another website. Backlinks to search engines indicate that this other website thinks your content is good enough to include a link to it in their own content. It's a signal that others vouch for your content. Because of this, search engines rank sites with more back links higher. 

The top way to get more backlinks organically is to create great content. This can take months or years depending on the quality of your content and how you promote your content. 

There are also ways to speed up the process of getting backlinks. This includes:

  • Finding content like resources and lists where wines/wineries like yours are mentioned and asking the writer to add yours
  • Finding old, broken links and asking the site owner to update it
  • Searching for unlinked brand mentions and asking the site owner to add a link
  • Engage and build relationships with writers who create content prospective buyers may read
